Where can I go if I cannot afford to buy food?

Answer

There are several options to help students who are experiencing food insecurity. Seattle University offers emergency short-term food assistance as well as guidance for long-term solutions.

Short Term Emergency Solutions:

  • Food pantry: All students at SU have access to the SU Food Pantry operated by Wellness and Health Promotion. To access the pantry, please complete the request form here. Students must complete a request form weekly no later than 10AM on Wednesdays and are limited to one bag per week.
  • Emergency Redhawk Dining Cards: The Emergency Redhawk Dining Card program provides short-term financial assistance to students experiencing an unexpected financial emergency. To access the program, students should complete an application. If eligible for the program, students will receive a Redhawk Dining Card valid only at On-Campus dining locations. Ineligible students will be connected to other resources.
  • Food banks: This link lists all food banks in the Seattle area and their location and hours.

 Long Term Solutions:

  • Apply for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): SNAP offers food benefits for eligible low-income individuals and families, including some eligible college students. Students who are attending coursework in person and live in Seattle (on or off campus) while they are attending should apply for benefits in Washington State. Students completing coursework online should complete application for benefits with the state they reside in.
